The ‘style dictator’ actually started out knitting as a teenager at home in Merthyr, where his dad worked at the Hoover factory!
He went on to study in Cardiff, at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art in London before he was spotted by Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel and appointed head designer of knitwear. In 1998 he launched his own label and his glamorous designs were soon coveted by the stars.
Named 'British Designer of the Year' in 2001, Macdonald became Creative Director of the French fashion house Givenchy. His career really took off in 2004 when British Airways asked him to bring their staff uniforms into the 21st century and put the glamour back into flying. Recognising his contribution to the fashion industry, Julien was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2006. We all got to know hms a little bit better when he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013!
