John Fielding joined the 24th Regiment as John Williams, changing his name because he didn't want his parents to know he'd run away and joined the army.
He was awarded the V.C. for his part in the battle of Rorke's Drift on 22-23 January 1879.
In later life he lived in Cwmbran and was buried at St Michael and All Angels church at Llantarnam following his death in 1932 aged 75. His funeral cortege, half a mile long, was filmed by Pathe News and shown in cinemas across Britain. A parade is held annually at St Michael on the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of the battle.
