Type: Heritage / Visitor Centre
Based at the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Rhondda Heritage Park is a living testament to the mining communities of the World famous Rhondda Valleys.
The park offers a fascinating insight into the rich culture and character of the Rhondda Valleys in a unique entertaining and educational environemnet for all ages.
Accompanied by your tour guide (all guides are ex-miners), your first stop is the Lamp Room - don your safety helmet and 'ride' the 'cage' to 'pit bottom'.
Explore the underground workings and experience the sights, sounds and smells of a 1950's pit on the subterranean tour 'A Shift in Time'. Your tour guide will answer any questions and contribute to his own inimitable anecdotes of life underground. The tour ends with an unforgettable simulated ride back to the surface.
On the surface, the innovative multi media exhibition 'Black Gold - The Story of Coal' takes visitors through the culture and character of the Rhondda as seen through the eyes of three generations of a mining family.
