Ghost Tours in the South Wales Valleys
Ghostly Trails
This is all getting very spooky. There’s a 16th-century manor house in the Valleys called Llancaiach Fawr. The handsome, well-preserved old building, open to visitors, is a bit of a one-off (there aren’t many houses from the same period in Wales). But the big talking point is its ghostly atmosphere. It really is haunted according to many reputable sources – from previous residents and members of staff who testify to uncanny events, to the South Wales Paranormal Research Group who have conducted many experiments here. Llancaiach Fawr has also appeared on TV programmes about the supernatural, including ‘Most Haunted’. There’s even a BBC Ghostcam. Don’t believe a word of it? Then take one of Llancaiach Fawr’s winter evening ghost tours and decide for yourself.
When you’re wandering the battlements of nearby Caerphilly Castle you’ll also need to keep your wits about you. You may bump into the ‘Green Lady’. She’s French, not Welsh. The lady in question is the spirit of a medieval princess from Angoulême, forever doomed to haunt the castle after an affair that turned out badly. Ah well, as they often say in Angoulême (and elsewhere), ‘Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose’ (which, in case you’re not familiar with the age-old saying, means ‘The more things change, the more they stay the same’).
