Spectator Sports in the South Wales Valleys
Let's take a look...
South Wales is the spiritual home of rugby. The world-famous Cardiff Arms Park, now reborn as the Millennium Stadium, is just down the road from us. In The Valleys themselves every spare patch of ground seems to have tall posts stuck at either end. So it’s no surprise that we have produced some of the game’s greats, and continue to do so. Small villages and sizeable towns all have their teams, and club rugby flourishes here. A few of the larger clubs include Pontypridd, Pontypool and Abertillery to name just a few. There’s soccer too and plenty of it, played to a good standard in an atmosphere that’s without the hothouse pressure of the big clubs.
Thanks to Wales Rally GB, motorsports enthusiasts worldwide are now familiar with the South Wales forests and legendary names such as Rhondda, Rheola and Margam. These fast, flowing forest roads are too good to be used just once a year – they see regular use on
national and club events, attracting spectators from all over the world.
Fans of another sport – horse racing – are also heading our way to a brand-new racecourse. Ffos Las near Llanelli opened to great fanfare in 2009. This fabulous newcomer, with superb viewing for spectators and racegoers and stunning modern facilities, is bringing top-class racing to the western Valleys with a programme of National Hunt and Flat fixtures.
